This month we would like to feature two key success stories about partnerships, both developed during the five year span of the Tourism Knowledge Cluster. The partnership between National Geographic and The Crown of the Continent, and the geotourism Mapguide that was created which covers South Eastern British Columbia into Alberta and down to Montana, and the partnerships developed through the Tourism Cluster .

Essential Skills for the East Kootenay Tourism Industry

An exciting new training program was recently announced in the East Kootenay to benefit the Tourism and Hospitality Industry. 

The Essential Skills for the East Kootenay Tourism Industry (ESEKTI) program is funded by the Canada – British Columbia Labour Market Agreement and is coordinated by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development.  The Skills Plus Initiative is a partnership of business, labour, education and the provincial government intended to raise worker skill across BC through integrating essential skills into work based training.   These skills, such as reading text, document use, numeracy, writing, oral communication, working with others, continuous learning, thinking skills and computer use can help employees deal with more complex tasks.

            The ESEKTI Program will be delivered to 80 employees in up to 25 participating small businesses in the Tourism/ Hospitality sector in five communities in the East Kootenays: Cranbrook, Kimberley, Fernie, Invermere and Golden.  The program will provide training to the industry that incorporates Essential Skills into eight three-hour workshops to be delivered over a period of 10 months starting in May 2009.  The program also requires that employers take part and offer additional on the job training and coaching.  Individualized training for those participants who are interested in completing a COTR Certificate program will also be available and promoted to the businesses and employees as an opportunity to certify appropriate career-minded staff.
